"GIS is entering a whole new world--a better world, but one that requires new, and often more complex, skills. GIS data managers accustom to managing LIBRARIAN databases or directories of shapefiles are finding the transition to ArcSDE and Oracle challenging. Similarly, Oracle DBAs used to running CRM or work order management systems are often unfamiliar with handling large amounts of binary data, such as rasters, or extremely complex application logic, such as versioning. Mannion Geosystems brings the perspective to speak to both sides, and the technical muscle to help them build a geodatabase, together, the right way." Prior to starting Mannion Geosystems, Michael spent seven years writing and teaching ArcSDE training courses for ESRI, as well as courses on ArcInfo, Avenue, and extensions. He managed the ArcSDE track of the instructor-led curriculum from its inception in 1996 until 2002, at which point he transferred leadership of the program in order to focus on advanced technical issues and on-site consulting. After leaving ESRI to return to his native New England, Michael worked as a production DBA for ESRI business partner James W. Sewall Company in Old Town, ME. He now runs Mannion Geosystems from his office in nearby Eddington, ME. If you are a long-time ESRI software user, you may recognize Michael from the classroom, presenting ArcSDE technical workshops at the ESRI International User Conference, or authoring for ArcUser magazine. He also managed the Map Gallery at the Conference for four years, and developed its first online, map-based registration system--using ArcSDE and Oracle, of course. Before moving to Redlands, Michael was busy earning his B.S. in Geography from Penn State, where he spent many long nights in the GIS lab.
